Our First Year Homesteading

The year 2016 was our first official year homesteading. On The Dirt, we review some of the events that led us to start homesteading, what steps we took our first year, why we are taking it slow, and our homesteading plans for 2017.

For those new to our channel, we have created a playlist of all the videos in 2016 which can be viewed here.

Thank you for joining us on our journey!

  1. This is my first year homesteading as well, so it’s nice to hear from some other newbies. 🙂 You mentioned you are new to gardening and having a lot of trial and error. If you want to know the EASIEST way to garden while growing the best tasting food, I recommend checking out Back to Eden. It is a documentary you can watch for free at http://www.backtoedenfilm.com. I’ve personally gone to his home twice and tasted his fruits and veggies and they are SO SWEET! I have also grown two gardens using his methods and it really is the easiest, lowest maintenance way to garden. Look forward to hearing more about your adventures.

We have Ruth Stout’s book on deep mulch, which I think is very similar, and we use that. We found it works great so far.
